Eggs and sesame seeds in EU allergen law
Published 2026-10-08 · PlateNote
Corrected 2026-10-14: added the mustard exemption of Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/2512 (applies from 1 April 2025).
Annex II of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 lists eggs and products thereof (item 3) and sesame seeds and products thereof (item 11). Unlike milk, soy, fish, gluten, nuts and (since April 2025) mustard, the legal text lists no exemptions for these two items.
In practice
- “Products thereof” means ingredients made from eggs or sesame count too — for example egg-based sauces or sesame paste — so ask about sauces, glazes, breads and dressings, not only the main ingredient.
- Sesame oil is a product of sesame seeds; the list gives no exemption for it.
The official words
Eggs: eieren, Eier, œufs, huevos, uova, ovos. Sesame seeds: sesamzaad, Sesamsamen, graines de sésame, granos de sésamo, semi di sesamo, sementes de sésamo (NL, DE, FR, ES, IT, PT). See the 14-allergen table.

A card is a communication aid; it does not guarantee that food is safe.
